Brazil: #29M, the people in the streets until overthrowing Bolsonaro and his government

By Alternativa Socialista/PSOL – ISL/Brazil

The massive rallies and mobilizations expressed with strength that the Bolsonaro government is more dangerous than Covid-19. The people took to the streets in self-defense and against a government that applies a systematic plan of attacks against the majorities. It means a new blow for this government in chronic crisis. The streets trembled with the footsteps of a people that is not defeated and went out to fight for vaccines for all, emergency aid, against cuts in universities and unpopular reforms, and fundamentally to throw out Bolsonaro, Mourão and their entire genocidal government.

In most cities, from north to south and from east to west, the protests were massive, even exceeding many expectations. The PT, in some states, the night before issued official statements calling on people to not mobilize to avoid crowds. Unfortunately, the State Board of the Pernambuco PSOL also called for demobilizing and carrying out a symbolic protest. But the people did not listen to their calls and went out with all their strength to the streets with protection measures and taking care of social distancing, as was widely recommended by all the organizations that promoted the mobilization during the previous days.

There is strength to fight, we must continue to the end

The main conclusion that emerges from this day of national struggle is that there is strength to fight, against all sectors and political leaderships that spoke of fascism and the closure of the regime with Bolsonaro in the presidency. A second conclusion is that we have to give continuity to 29M. The government received a severe blow, but it still has the agreement at the top with the parties of the regime – on the right and left – that support it finishing its term until next year´s elections. We cannot leave the streets until we overthrow that agreement and throw out the murderous government.

The trade union centrals, social movements and the left have the responsibility of calling for a plan of struggle that will give continuity to this important day. And call a General Health Strike, to stop the massacre. This is the only real path if what we want is a vaccine in the arm, food on the table and the defeat of the war against the working class and the poor. The streets are ours, we cannot abandon them until we succeed!
