Statement on Ukraine

The Russian invasion of Ukraine highlights the sheer barbarism of the capitalist imperialist world order and underlines the urgency of fighting for a socialist alternative that champions the interests of workers and the oppressed.

Socialists and militant workers are posed with the joint task of defending the national and democratic rights of the Ukrainian people and opposing the ramping up of imperialist tensions and the threat of a broader war. Concretely that means:

1. Opposing the Russian imperialist invasion of Ukraine and calling for the withdrawal of all Russian troops.

2.Opposing the advance of the NATO military alliance in Eastern Europe and the massive accumulation of arms underway in all capitalist powers.

3. Supporting the resistance of the Ukrainian people and their right to defend themselves from the brutal Russian aggression with all means at their disposal. Solidarity with the anti-capitalist forces that resist from a position independent from Zelensky´s conservative and anti-worker government.

4. Showing solidarity with the heroic anti-war forces in Russia. Rejecting the conversion of correct criticisms of Russia´s imperialist aggression into nationalist anti-Russian sentiments, and the economic sanctions that harm the working people.

5. Promoting mobilisation against the war world-wide, and the solidarity between Russian and Ukrainian workers, as well as internationally.

6. Rejecting the deceitful campaigns that present the conflict as a dispute between “democracy and authoritarianism” or between “progressives and Nazis,” as well as the calls for “national unity” under the leadership of any of the imperialist powers that compete in Ukraine.

7. Supporting the cancellation of Ukraine’s $113 billion foreign debt.

8. Championing the rights of Ukrainian refugees and all refugees fleeing war, poverty and racist attacks.
