Statement of the General Student Union of Lebanon
To all student unions and organizations around the world, we, the General Student Union of Lebanon, extend a call for solidarity and cooperation.
Solidarity in the face of the persecution of our comrades of the Union and in the country and those who have fought the power that controls and exploits from the day of the uprising through today. The day when the economic class system began to reproduce itself in adaptation to the political changes that occurred in our region.
Since the day of the ceasefire, summons began to come from the courts to comply with the judiciary in cases from the year 2020, including a case involving our comrade of the General Student Union, Khader Anwar, after the action of “spraying graffiti on the German Foreign Ministry in December 2023 in response to the German Foreign Minister’s visit to support the occupation”. He has already been arrested, summoned and tried for what they call “riots”. But now a new court has summoned him on 01/23/2025 for the same action. We consider that these are struggles that express our project with the tools available.
Our project, which is the opposite of the project of those who depend on money and power, is to free our societies from all forms of domination, submission and exploitation, by scientifically and materially supporting local production through cooperative relations, as we expressed during the war through the aid we carried out. At a time when the State was unable to meet the basic needs of the displaced, we were working to secure means of production to produce consumables, and for the displaced to work on them cooperatively.
The day the regime initiated the security situation to impose the new reality, we raised our project, of which our actions were expressive.
Science must serve society and not annihilate it, as the Zionist entity and its successors, US imperialism and its other supporters did. Humankind is the compass and knowledge is at its service, not to be intellectually dominated by colonial cognitive tools. Therefore, in this new political reality in Lebanon, we say that the class structure is still there, as are the owners of the militias, and the “party of the rich” (the economic power) that presents its project, “Aspirations towards a New Lebanon”, to the new Prime Minister and congratulates him. Meanwhile, the project of the poor is absent after neoliberalism, in the face of the Lebanese political authority, destroyed all forms of social organization, such as unions and others, under the permanent and continuous threat of the Zionist enemy.
The student struggle, which does not give up its revolutionary tasks and the liberation of society, can only be translated into the solidarity of all actors in the world, specifically of the students, after their movements in support of Palestine were a confirmation of these words. The second call is for cooperation with the aim of making science a tool for the liberation and development of societies, instead of domination and exploitation to accumulate wealth and subjugate societies. Furthermore, we must transcend the individualization of the struggle and its fragmentation towards the issues of our societies, the reality of the system as a global capitalist social system whose contradictions at the geopolitical level are only confirmed by its integration into a capitalist system that is murderous of humanity and nature. Otherwise a thousand Gazas, a thousand massacres and a thousand births will be repeated, and whoever raises opposition will be killed or arrested.
Therefore, we:
- Condemn and warn against the transformation of the Lebanese regime into a police system complicit with international imperialism, and stress that the persecutions and trials of comrades and activists in Lebanon are nothing more than an episode of the class struggle that we are waging against the complicit local regimes and the murderous international system.
- Will continue our local and international struggles, the resistance and the revolutionaries, the students and the workers, and our slogan is for them (students, workers, against the occupation).
