We share the letter sent to us by the Munduruku Ipeređ ayũ Movement for which we ask for solidarity.

We, of the Munduruku Ipeređ ayũ Movement – caciques, cacicas, leaderships, warriors, children, shamans –, have been in occupation for seven days on the BR-230, Itaituba-PA region, demanding an urgent hearing with Minister Gilmar Mendes, of the Supreme Federal Court (STF). Our movement is peaceful, but we have suffered repeated attacks and threats from truck drivers, including insults, stone throwing, shooting and violent maneuvers with vehicles. We vehemently repudiate these aggressions that put the lives of our people at risk and declare that the STF will be responsible for any damage we may suffer, because we are here fighting to be heard. Since the Conciliation Chamber of Minister Gilmar Mendes was created without due prior consultation with indigenous peoples.

The Time Frame, widely defended by agribusiness, violates our original rights and hurts the Federal Constitution, which recognizes our ancestry and the demarcation of our lands. Minister Gilmar Mendes and other members of the STF have the power to define the course of decisions that affect our lives, but they prefer to follow paths that violate rights that have belonged to us since long before the formation of the Brazilian State. While closed meetings are held, without free, prior and informed consultation, the Munduruku People continue to resist in the rain and the sun in the protection of territories such as Sawre Ba’pin and Sawre Muybu, whose demarcations are being threatened or paralyzed. They still try to deceive us by removing mining from the agenda, but they maintain multiple attacks on our existence, which we will not accept.

We also highlight that we are suffering pressures from companies linked to agribusiness and receiving judicial intimidation that seek to repress our occupation, with the use of the state’s armed forces, in an attempt to violate our human rights and right to demonstration. However, this section of the BR-230 that overlaps the BR-163 – fundamental for the transportation of soybeans and a symbol of the economic power that drives the Time Frame – will remain interrupted as long as we are denied due recognition.

We reaffirm our call for direct dialogue: we want an immediate hearing with Minister Gilmar Mendes, in which our voices are truly heard. If there is no positive response within 24 hours after receiving this document, we will intensify the mobilization and maintain the total paralysis of the road. It won’t be the first time we’ve demanded to be heard, but we’ve never really been considered. We will not back down, because this struggle did not start now – we have been to Brasilia countless times, but we have never really been heard. If our people suffer even more serious consequences, we attribute the responsibility to the STF and to the entire conciliation chamber convened by Minister Gilmar Mendes to negotiate our rights, which insists on ignoring us as subjects of rights.
