The 1st Congress of Socialist Revolution, internal tendency of the PSOL and Brazilian section of the International Socialist League, ISL, took place at the end of June. They were intense days of debate and collective elaboration between the delegations of militants from different states of the country. In addition to being an immense joy for the militants who, just two years ago, had gathered to take the extraordinary step of unification, the Congress has consolidated itself as an important basis for the construction of the party and brings great challenges on the path of the revolution with a socialist and internationalist horizon.

By Veronica O’Kelly – from the National Directorate of Socialist Revolution and the Coordination of the ISL

Against the rise of the extreme right, we need a socialist and revolutionary antidote

The debate on the world situation took center stage. The capitalist crisis worsens, generating wars, environmental destruction, misery and hunger. With the new arrival of Trump to the US government, kicking the board of the imperialist world order, the world is a real chaos. More inter-imperialist disputes arise, in which we do not take sides for any of these imperialist camps and defend an independent position.

Ukraine, today under attack by Putin, is experiencing the consequences of this world chaos. We are for the defeat of Russian imperialism, with the Ukrainian people in defense of their self-determination, independent and critical of the Zelensky government and against any intervention by NATO and the United States.

The advance of the extreme right, which governs countries such as the United States, Italy and Argentina and threatens to come to power in many others – including Brazil – represents a great danger. While the bourgeoisie is betting on increasingly reactionary solutions to guarantee its profits, the masses are rising up in strikes, mobilizations and revolts. But the repeated betrayals of the reformist leaderships, added to the absence of coherent revolutionary leaderships, prevent the victory of these struggles and strengthen the emergence of the extreme right as a false alternative.

The future is still in dispute. In order to defeat the extreme right and open the way to a socialist transformation, it is essential to build anti-capitalist and socialist alternatives, with a revolutionary program, a party and a socialist and revolutionary International.

We reaffirm our commitment to the Palestinian cause and to all the peoples of the Middle East.

Trump and Netanyahu are carrying out the “final solution” project: the holocaust of the Palestinian people. Gaza is under siege, hunger and the blockade of humanitarian aid are being used as weapons of war. Bombs and drones kill hundreds of Palestinians every day. Children have become priority targets of murderous Zionism. The queues of people looking for food or water at the so-called “humanitarian” posts are also subject to attacks and become real death traps.

Israel’s colonial and imperialist project goes beyond Palestine, with continuous attacks on Lebanon, threats to Iran and an invasion of Syria, which represents a danger for all the peoples of the region. There is no real solution without defeating this state of apartheid and oppression. That is why, in addition to reaffirming our commitment to internationalist mobilization in solidarity with the Palestinian people, we are fighting for an uprising of the peoples of the Middle East. A new Arab Spring is necessary to defeat the plans of Zionism, imperialism and also the Arab governments that betray the Palestinian people in agreements and deals with the Zionist invasion. The only possible “final solution” for the Palestinian people – and for all the peoples of Islam – is a single, democratic, secular and socialist Palestine, as part of a Federation of Socialist Republics of the Middle East.

Building the revolution on a global scale. We stand firm with the International Socialist League!

The First Congress gave priority to the main task of the revolutionaries of the whole world: to build a Socialist and Revolutionary International in order to avoid the future of barbarism to which capitalism is leading us.

Faced with the skeptics, reformists or possibilists who have abandoned the anti-capitalist struggle to join popular-front or class conciliation policies – today expressed in the so-called ”Broad Fronts” – and also with the sectarians who, trapped in the logic of self-proclamation, limit themselves to bearing witness to reality without offering real political alternatives to the masses, the ISL proposes a project of internationalist and revolutionary regroupment.

This experience seeks to overcome the mistakes and vices of the past, understanding that organizations of different traditions and experiences in the revolutionary field can unite to break with opportunism, centrism and sectarianism, adopting a healthy democratic centralist method that respects differences and allows fraternal debates.

From Socialist Revolution we reaffirm our commitment to the construction and strengthening of this project in Brazil and in the world.

Absence of a left-wing and independent political alternative in the face of polarization

The debate on Brazil addressed the current situation, marked by a strong political and social polarization. On the one hand, the extreme right and Bolsonaro are contesting the masses, winning elections, implementing unpopular policies in state and municipal governments and legislating against the people in parliament, presenting themselves as a real government alternative for 2026. On the other hand, the Lula-Alckmin government co-governs with the traditional right – including Bolsonarist figures in the ministries – and has not fulfilled its campaign promises to improve the life of the people. On the contrary, it is applying the adjustment, the salary ceiling of the state, maintains the benefits for agribusiness and the extractive and polluting industry, and imposes a “spending ceiling” on public services and social assistance.

Unfortunately, faced with this polarization, the working class and the popular sectors are not represented. Despite leading struggles, uprisings and processes to confront neoliberal austerity policies, political tools with real capacity to contest power have not yet emerged. Defeating the extreme right is a task of the first order, because it represents a great danger for working people. We warn that the disappointment with the Lula government opens space for the extreme right to grow and return to power.

We know that the only way to avoid this is to build a left-wing and independent political alternative, to win at the polls and in the streets, with strikes, demonstrations and confrontations capable of breaking commitments with the rich and satisfying the demands of those at the bottom, those who are increasingly poor. This is the challenge that we have taken on and that we are ready to build.

Where is the PSOL going?

Within the framework of the debate on the national situation, we addressed the situation of the PSOL, where today we act as an internal trend. We are founding members of the party, we come from the process in which ”the radicals” were expelled from the PT, and we are very aware of the importance of this tool – we continue to fight for the socialist program that united us. But the PSOL changed: today it is controlled by reformist sectors allied to the Lula government, who have abandoned class independence and are willing to reissue the failed experiment of the PT. This is not our project. That is why, together with other internal tendencies of the left of the party, we are fighting against the majority leadership that is liquidating the founding project.

At this Congress, the Socialist Revolution militancy reaffirms its commitment to an anti-capitalist program for the construction of a party with class independence and internal democracy. We maintain our call to the MONTH, Strengthen, APS, LSR, Ecosocialist Rebellion, Centelhas, Insurgency RD, Alicerce and other left currents to join forces and build common initiatives.

We are not fetishists in any organizational way and we are ready to change if reality and the class struggle demand it. That is why we will not remain silent and we will continue to be a current that criticizes and denounces the liquidationist leadership. At the same time, we commit ourselves to regrouping revolutionaries who, inside or outside the PSOL, are willing to build an anti-capitalist, revolutionary and internationalist party.

Socialist Revolution: our causes and our militancy

The 1st Congress strengthens the party for the next period, which we understand will be of many struggles and major disputes. Part of our task is to strengthen the work we have built and where we are organized, such as in the metroviary category, in chemistry, in that of state workers and especially in education and youth. We reaffirm our causes:

-Ecosocialism

-Classist, anti-racist, inti-colonial, anti-patriarchy socialist feminism

-Anti-Fascism and Anti-racism

-Anti-sionism and anti-imperialism

-Anti-capitalism and socialism

-Revolutionary and militant internationalism

-Building a revolutionary party

We organize and fight for these causes. We invite everyone who wants to join this project to get in touch and build it with us!
