On January 9, Russia has escalated the conflict by launching hypersonic ballistic missiles – nuclear-capable Oreshnik model – against critical infrastructure in Ukraine. The aggression was presented as retaliation for an attack on Putin’s residence. The attacks, which included the massive use of drones and other projectiles, have resulted in civilian casualties, extensive damage, loss of heat in half of the civilian residences and have left more than 400,000 homes without electricity. Russian imperialism is taking advantage of the fact that the world public attention is concentrating on the US imperialist aggression against Venezuela to commit more crimes in Ukraine. We have managed to communicate with one of our comrades of the Ukrainian Socialist League (LSU) who, with the great limitations imposed by the situation, has told us:
“Hello, the situation we are living in is really very serious. If before we were only without electricity, now we are left without heating in our apartments. Russian missiles and drones have destroyed all the power plants in and around Kiev. It is currently -7 °C outside, but the forecast is very bad, with a strong cold snap imminent that could reach -23 °C.
The mayor of Kiev, Vitaliy Klychko, has appealed to the city’s residents to leave the city and move to areas with electricity and heating. Heavy shelling on Kiev continues every night. Communications with the outside world have worsened, we cannot always access the internet quickly, as it depends on the power supply and when it is available it is of low intensity. The same goes for the possibility of charging cell phones and other devices indispensable for daily life.
While the working people suffer the worst conditions imposed by the criminal actions of the Russian army, Trump secretly negotiates with Zelenski and Putin. The fate of our people is being discussed behind our backs, with mentions of major territorial, economic, political and military concessions, while Putin increases military pressure on the combat fronts. In general terms, the document on our country adopted at the III Congress of the International Socialist League (ISL) remains in force.
We see that the residents of Kiev are not yet ready to leave the city. Let’s hope for the best, and although we are all terribly tired and exhausted and there is massive unemployment, we continue to resist, regardless of the policies of the Zelensky government. Our LSU comrades are doing well at the moment! More than ever, we need mobilized international solidarity. We send an embrace to all comrades of the LIS.”
