The ISL In Portugal

By H.T.

From February 20 to 23, an ISL delegation, with Ruben Tzanoff and Alejandro Bodart, was in Lisbon, invited by the Socialist Alternative Movement (MAS), a Trotskyist organization with a long history in the country with which we have begun a process of getting to know each other and convergence.

In several meetings with the leaders of the MAS, we analyzed the international situation and the regrouping project that the ISL has been carrying out, the panorama of the class struggle in Portugal and the new situation that opened with the emergence of S.T.O.P., the teachers union that broke onto the scene and is driving qualitative changes in the country’s labor union organizations. On Thursday the 22nd, we held an in person and online talk with the MAS membership at its central office, where we were able to further discuss the ISL proposals and respond to many concerns about what is happening in Argentina, which our comrades follow with great interest in the relevance of the rise of Milei, the resistance he has unleashed, the presence of the FITU and the MST.

The agreements on the need to regroup revolutionaries and how the ISL has been tackling this challenge were very profound. To continue advancing the relationship and learn more about the development of S.T.O.P., which our comrades have helped to develop, we have planned a new visit to Lisbon on March 2, when an arruada for public education will be held.

The trip to Lisbon also allowed us to meet again with António Louçã, (1) a friend of many battles, a leader of the media workers union, a journalist and en important historian, with whom, in addition to sharing a pleasant moment, we began to exchange ideas to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Portuguese Revolution on April 25 this year and needs to be remembered from a socialist and revolutionary perspective.

In short, it was a successful visit that opens the possibility of a new confluence, in order to take steps toward solving the most pressing problem that the working class has: building an international revolutionary tool, rooted in the largest possible number of countries to confront the challenges posed by the complex global situation.
